man is superficial, man is greedy. man is selfish, man is self-centered. man is also materialistic.
there have been so many GP essay questions with like uh, " youths these days are not as hardworking as compared to their parent's generation." and we never fail to drag in the factor on materialism. actually it's not very true to say that all youths are materialistic, but there are a handful of spoilt brats who want to buy everything they fancy for. The reason why i want to talk about this is because i feel Education kind of makes us materialistic too.
you see the geog department is organising a field trip to Cambrige and it's a 3 week course, comprising of field work (like measuring the velocity of the river), talks by their geog professors and u basically get to mingle around with the Cambridge professors. Wait but the cost is a whooping 3000 dollars.and it's subjected to unforseen alterations like the weather So if one wants to attend this what shit they call "once in a lifetime opporunity", does it make the person materialistic?
i think what sarene said today was really meaningful, she mentioned that money is not to be spent like that. 3000 bucks is not a measly amount, unless your parents print money as their job or you are Goh Chok Tong's wife. So why is it that only those who are financially able to afford this sum of money can go, and those who are unwilling and unable to pay are not given the chance? So what's up with education's meritocratic scheme?
Well anyway, going for overseas trip doesn't make u any smarter, or more advantaged/well-off than your peers who can't go for it. Man does not have a photographic memory - it's just taking a plane over to UK, and back, and u pick up some good experience. So, does money make the world go round?
there was this newspaper article a few weeks ago about this malay married woman who had pre-marital sex, and she got pregnant. Now she finds it difficult to cope with the rising costs of having a child, and she has to "THINK 10 TIMES BEFORE SPENDING 10 DOLLARS."
so to all those rich little children who think that material welfare makes them happy, who scream in delight " i like that bagggg!!" and u immediately fish out 50 bucks from your wallet for it and hand it over to the lady grinning over the counter, u have to think 50 times.
because some of them really DON'T DESERVE IT*, simply because they have NOTHING to prove your worth.
where "it" refers to material possession.*
today is friday!! so that's something to rejoice about. tomorrow i have a dental appointment and then our class is going to bras basah to buy studying material. like our economics textbook and chinese text as well. and many other books to buy like geography, so all these will cost a huge bomb that can blow up the whole of Singapore. Books can be said as the most worthwhile things to buy, in my opinion. Rather than spending money on a top, why not spend it on a good book?
well this is rather subjective. but i truly agree with sarene about spending money only when u think u deserve spending it.
a penny for my thoughts?
